Talking about poet cum performance artist Sompong Thawee, trawling the net the other day I found a three-year-old poem of his I took time to fiddle with for a change of pace in the translation steeplechase I’ve been running against myself lately. Here it is:
ถามก้อนหินดูซิ
Ask a stone
ถามก้อนหินดูซิ
การเมืองคืออะไร
Ask a stone
What politics is
สายลมจะตอบไหม
เลือดที่หลั่งริน
เสียงไชโยโห่ร้อง
เรื่องราวของการปฏิวัติ
Will the wind answer
The blood that spills
The hurrahs and the cheers
The trappings of military coups
ถามก้อนหินดูซิ
นักการเมืองคือใคร
Ask a stone
Who the politicians are
สายลมจะตอบไหม
แรงละโมบที่ไม่รู้สิ้น
น้ำลายไหลเยิ้มจากมุมปาก
ประเทศชาติที่มืดบอด
กลางคืนจะเป็นนิรันดร์
Will the wind answer?
The thrust of greed that knows no end
Saliva dribbling down their lips
The nation plunged into darkness
Night time eternal
สายน้ำตาเหมือนสายน้ำที่ทอดยาว
จากประชาชนหนึ่งถึงประชาชนหนึ่ง
จากความรู้สึกหนึ่งถึงคุณค่าของความเป็นคน
ไม่รู้จบของความเศร้า
บอกเล่าความเงียบ
The flow of tears like a long winding river
From one people to another people
From one a feeling to of the worth of being human
Unending sadness
Expressed in silence
ไม่มีอะไรในโลกที่กำกวม
นอกจากความยากจน
ไม่มีอะไรในโลกที่กำกวม
นอกจากการปลิ้นปล้อนหลอกหลวง
ไม่มีอะไรในโลกที่กำกวม

Nothing in the world is dubious
But poverty
Nothing in the world is ambiguous
But trickiness and deceit
Nothing in the world is unclear
But blind unquenchable thirst for high positions

หัวใจผากแห้งลงแล้วทีละดวง
ชีวิตจมดิ่งลงแล้วทีละชีวิต

Hearts being parched wilting one heart at a time
Life sinking one life at a time

A couple of comments:

In these two lines ถึง is used in different senses. The first conveys transference, which you have aptly translated as ‘to’, but the second ถึง is the mostly-mandatory preposition that follows รู้สึก when what you is being felt is not an adjective/verb but a noun. So whereas one may รู้สักเสียใจ ‘feel sad’, one will most often รู้สึก_ถึง_ความเสียใจ ‘feel sadness’. This is sometimes elided, but most often included, and so it seems clear that in this phrase คุณค่าของความเป็นคน is not the destination of any transference, but rather is the feeling being experienced. As such I would phrase the second line ‘From a feeling of the worth of being human’.

I would suggested ‘wilting’ in place of ‘being parched’, which pairs better with ‘sinking’ in the next line, and is perhaps slightly more elegant in rhythm.
