Festival Ferré – 13

In English, French, Reading matters on 03/04/2011 at 7:03 pm

At, the brass orchestration is very much 1970s dated but the interpretation of this rather corny song is superb, adding a sense of frailty, power and poetic emotion to this mating of soul and flesh in absentia.

La lettre – Léo Ferré – 1970

The letter

Your shadow is here, on my table, and I really can’t tell you
How the artificial sun of the lamps copes with it
I know that you are here, that you never left me, never
I have you in me, deep down, in the blood, and you flow in my veins
You enter my heart and purify yourself in my lungs
I love you

I drink you, I live you, I penetrate you and it’s good
I bring to you tonight my child of old, the one I made for myself by myself
Who looks like me, who looks like you, out of your womb, out of that womb of yours which dwells in my head
You are the sister, the girl, the companion and the slut of this all-burning God
That lights up our nights since we made the nights ours

It seems to me I was pulled out of you and you, brought out of me
When you speak, delight is me
When I sing I speak to you
We come from elsewhere, you and I. Nobody knows
When I die, you won’t be able to live any longer except in alarm
You won’t have a moment to yourself any longer
You’ll be mine beyond the track that will keep us apart
And I’ll call out to you
And you’ll come
If you died, you would call me out

Mon amour…

I am life for you, and sorrow, and joy, and death
I die in you, and our deaths conjoined will make for a new, a unique life, as if two stars met
As if they were meant to from time immemorial, as if they came together to climax for ever
What you do is fine since you love me
What I do is fine since I love you
To this day, to this hour, for all eternity, my love
My love…
