In English, Reading matters on 16/10/2010 at 2:28 pm

The Nation online last night: ‘A government committee has approved Bt1billion budget for a two-year project to promote reading.’ This in addition to last week’s policy to promote English as second language for all Thais.

In the mail this morning, a letter from the ML Bunluea Theipphayasuwan Fund grants me permission (as requested one year and eight days ago) to publish as an e-book my translation of Bunluea’s Thutiyawiseit so long as I make a donation to the fund of Bt300,000.

The website has been selling e-books of top Thai novels in translation for a full year. As anyone can check online, the two best sales have been my anthology, the 20 best novels of thailand (5 copies, each priced at Bt350), and Chart Korbjitti’s The Judgment (4 copies, each priced at Bt250).

  1. Ha! “Donation” indeed. Money grubbers.

Well, only 20 more years until the book enters the public domain. Sigh.

  2. Grrrrr! Le beurre et l’argent du beurre!

  3. Well – but after a 170 years or so of selling the book five times a year for 350 THB all the sales will be pure profit and go straight into your pocket! ;-)
